The first letters are the family

Engine code letters real photo 1

The first letter is the generation. M is the older BMW series, N is the generation from the 2000s, B is the modular engines from about 2014, and S is an M engine. The two numbers after it are the family, so N57 and B57 are different families even though both are diesel sixes.

Bavarian Engines Werke prints that code on the listing title. If your note only says 330d, you still need this code before you pay.

The next letter is the fuel

B means petrol, from the German word Benzin. D means diesel. N57D30 is a diesel. N55B30 is a petrol. People mix these up because both letters appear in the code.

A petrol engine will not replace a diesel, and the other way around, without a full conversion. That is a different job from a replacement.

The numbers are the size

The two digits after the fuel letter are the size in tenths of a litre. 30 means about 3.0 litres. 20 means about 2.0 litres. N47D20 is a 2.0 diesel. N57D30 is a 3.0 diesel.

A later letter, such as the A, B or C at the end, marks a version. N57D30A and N57D30B are related, but the turbo and the output can differ. Do not ignore that letter.

Where to read it on the car

The code is stamped on the block. On many fours and sixes it is on a pad low on the engine, often near the oil filter or the inlet. On a V8 it is often nearer the gearbox. Clean the pad and take a photo if it is oily.

The VIN is the other reliable way. Send it to the desk and ask which code the car was built with. The badge on the boot is the least reliable way.

Use the code when you order

Search the shop for the code, not for 320d. Then check the year and the photos. Two listings can share a code and still differ in sump or gearbox.

If you are not sure, send the photo of the stamp. Guessing from the badge is how the wrong engine gets crated.

Warranty

Many engines come with up to 12 months warranty. A proper workshop must fit the engine. The warranty is for a fault inside the engine. It does not cover the wrong engine, a dry start, the wrong oil, or damage done after you open the crate.

Shipping

Crate shipping from Hamburg costs 299 EUR. We pack the engine in a strong crate and send it to the address on your order. You need a forklift or an engine crane to unload it.
