The sump is the usual difference

xDrive adds a front propshaft under the engine. To make room, BMW often fits a different oil pan and sometimes different axle shafts and mounts. A rear-drive sump can hit that shaft. This is the mismatch workshops find after the engine is already in the bay.
Tell Bavarian Engines Werke the car is xDrive when you send the VIN. The badge sometimes hides it, but the sump will not.
The transfer case is separate

The transfer case, the front differential and the propshaft are not part of the engine listing unless the photos show them. A noisy transfer case stays noisy after a fresh engine.
If the old engine failed because the car was driven with a failed front diff or a dry transfer case, say so. The new engine still needs that drivetrain to be sound.
The code can be the same
An xDrive 530d and a rear-drive 530d can share an engine code and still need different pans and brackets. Same code does not mean same dress. Compare the photos of the sump with the engine you removed.
X5 and X6 cars are all-wheel drive as a rule. Their engines are listed as the SAV unit, not as a saloon unit with a deep sump.
Fitting notes
Support the front propshaft while the engine comes out. Do not let it hang on the joint. Renew the sump seal if the pan has to come off to match the car, and refill with the correct oil.
Coding is unchanged by xDrive in most cases, but hill-descent and transfer-case control are separate modules. A fault there is not an engine warranty claim.
What to write on the order
Write xDrive or rear drive, the chassis and the code. If you already removed the sump, photograph it. We would rather match the pan in Hamburg than ship a second one later.
Read the shipping page for unloading. An xDrive engine is the same freight pallet as any other complete unit.
Warranty
Many engines come with up to 12 months warranty. A proper workshop must fit the engine. The warranty is for a fault inside the engine. It does not cover the wrong engine, a dry start, the wrong oil, or damage done after you open the crate.
Shipping
Crate shipping from Hamburg costs 299 EUR. We pack the engine in a strong crate and send it to the address on your order. You need a forklift or an engine crane to unload it.

Often the same code, but a different sump and brackets. Say xDrive on the order.
Is the transfer case included?
No, unless the photos show it.

How long is the warranty?
Up to 12 months on many engines, for a fault inside the engine, after a proper fit. See the warranty page for the full rules.
Are the photos of the real engine?
Yes. When you buy Bavarian Engines Werke engines from us, the photos are real photos from our yard, not made-up pictures.

Yes. The VIN check is free. Send it before you pay and we confirm the engine fits.
