If the car is a diesel, order a diesel of the same code. If it is a petrol, order that petrol. The mounts, the fuel system, the exhaust and the software already match. That is the job most workshops want.

Bavarian Engines Werke sells the engine in the photos for that kind of replacement. We do not convert the car as part of the sale.

When a diesel suits

Diesels such as the M57 and the later sixes make strong torque at low revs. They suit high miles, towing and motorway cars. They also carry filters and EGR parts that must stay on the car and work.

A diesel is the wrong economy plan if you only do short cold trips. Filters block when the engine never gets hot.

When a petrol suits

Petrol sixes such as the N55 and B58 suit drivers who want a smoother engine and fewer exhaust filters. They still need the right oil and, on turbo cars, a cool-down before you switch off.

Older petrols such as the M54 are simpler. Newer turbo petrols need the charge pipes and the intercooler to be sound, or the new engine suffers the old fault.

Changing fuel is a project

Petrol to diesel, or diesel to petrol, means the gearbox, the tank and pumps, the exhaust, the wiring and the papers. In many countries the registration has to change. Budget for that before you look at engine prices.

Ask the inspector where the car is registered before you buy the other fuel type. A yes from a forum is not approval.

How to pick on this site

Stay in the same fuel and the same code. Use the shop filters. Read the photos. Send the VIN if the badge is all you have.

The warranty of up to 12 months applies to an eligible engine after a correct fit. It does not cover a fuel-type conversion that the car was not built for.

Warranty

Many engines come with up to 12 months warranty. A proper workshop must fit the engine. The warranty is for a fault inside the engine. It does not cover the wrong engine, a dry start, the wrong oil, or damage done after you open the crate.

Shipping

Crate shipping from Hamburg costs 299 EUR. We pack the engine in a strong crate and send it to the address on your order. You need a forklift or an engine crane to unload it.

FAQ

Can I put a diesel in my petrol BMW?

Only as a full conversion, with paperwork. It is not a normal replacement.

Which is more reliable?

Either can be, if the code matches and the service history was honest. The code matters more than the fuel.

Do you sell both?

Yes. Petrol and diesel are separate listings. Match the one the car has.

Do you ship petrol or diesel to my door?

Yes. Crate shipping from Hamburg costs 299 EUR to the address on your order.

How long is the warranty?

Up to 12 months on many engines, for a fault inside the engine, after a proper fit. See the warranty page for the full rules.

Are the photos of the real engine?

Yes. When you buy Bavarian Engines Werke engines from us, the photos are real photos from our yard, not made-up pictures.

Can you check my VIN first?

Yes. The VIN check is free. Send it before you pay and we confirm the engine fits.
